The Catalan parties urge to find a president in order to avoid a political stalemate that could lead to a new election.

Meanwhile, on 4 March 2018 thousands of opponents of Catalan secession from Spain attended a demonstration in Barcelona, in support of a fictional state called Tabarnia: it was a parody of the situation in Catalonia.

On 21 March 2018 Parliament speaker Roger Torrent announced that Jordi Sànchez could no longer be the presidential candidate so the third round of talks started in order to find a candidate with the most support to be sworn in as a Catalan president.

On 22 March 2018 the proposed candidacy of Jordi Turull was rejected by Parliament with 64 votes in favour, 65 votes against his candidacy and 4 abstentions by the far-left CUP party.

On 23 March Spanish Supreme Court indicted 25 out of the 28 Catalan politicians under investigation in the independence case. Among the 13 Catalan leaders charged with rebellion there were Carles Puigdemont, Jordi Sànchez and Jordi Turull.

Background information:

In January the separatist parties backed Carles Puigdemont, who is still in Belgium, but Spain’s Constitutional Court ruled that he could not have been sworn in at a distance. If he had wanted to candidate he would have returned to Spain and he would have handed himself over to the authorities. Then, it would have been up to the Supreme Court judge Pablo Llarena to decide whether he could have become the president or not.

However, On 1 March Puigdemont announced that he was temporarily abandoning his bid to reclaim the presidency in order to facilitate the formation of a new government and appointed Jordi Sànchez as his successor. Although Spanish government said it would have only appointed a head of government free of charges, the parliament speaker went ahead and nominated him as the presidential candidate after the two main parties in favour of a Catalan state agreed on him.

Sànchez, jailed since October 2017, was to be appointed Catalan president on 12 March 2018 but Spain's Supreme Court denied him permission to leave prison and attend the parliament in order to be sworn in.

In March 2018 Catalan parties urged a president to avoid political stalemate and a new election.

Meanwhile, on 4 March 2018 protesters mocked Catalan separatists by marching in support of a fictional state called Tabarnia.
