Communication on ‘Towards a reform of the Common European Asylum System and enhancing legal avenues to Europe’

Summary:

The European Commission adopted on 6 April 2016 a Communication which presents options for reforming the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) and developing safe and legal pathways to European Union terrritory.

Further information:

The Communication was released in the context of a migration crisis which hit several European countries since 2015. The pressure applied by the migratory flows highlighted significant structural weaknesses and shortcoming in the design and implementation of European asylum and migration policies. The European Union detected the need to put in place the tools to better manage migration in the medium and long term, in line with the approach set out in the European Agenda on Migration.
