Merkel ready to make spending cuts

Article discusses the outcome of a two-day retreat, 6-7 June 2010, at which the German cabinet discussed further measures to get to grips with government spending in the midst of the eurozone debt crisis.

Drastic public spending cuts totalling more than €80bn were then unveiled by Angela Merkel, German Chancellor, on the 7 June 2010, combined with up to 15,000 job cuts in the public sector, as part of a sweeping austerity package.
