Ukraine crisis: Putin orders retaliatory sanctions

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an Executive Order On Special Economic Measures to Protect the Russian Federation’s Security on the 6 August 2014. This introduced a ban on foreign economic operations involving the import to Russia of particular kinds of agricultural produce, raw materials and foodstuffs originating in countries that had decided to impose economic sanctions on Russian legal entities and/or physical individuals, or have joined such decisions.

The move was seen as retaliation to the Stage 3 sanctions imposed by the European Union the previous week (and similar measures introduced by the US and other countries) against Russia for its actions in Ukraine.
