Rijeka (Croatia) and Galway (Ireland) became the European Capitals of Culture 2020, holding the title for a full year.

Further information:

Rijeka became the first ever Croatian city to be chosen as European Capital of Culture. The opening celebrations took place on 1-2 February 2020. The program was built under the tagline "Port of Diversity", and focused on the themes of water, work and migration.

Galway was the third city in Ireland to hold the European Capital of Culture title after Dublin (1991) and Cork (2005). The program featured a special focus on local language, landscape and migration, and was organised under the motto “Let the Magic In”. Galway 2020 will begin in February, at the start of Imbolc - the first Celtic season in Ireland's ancient, pre-Christian calendar, and the ceremony travelled across the county from 2 to 7 February.

The initiative setting up a European Capital of Culture emerged in 1985. The cities are selected on the basis of a cultural programme that must have a strong European dimension, promote the participation and active involvement of the city's inhabitants and contribute to the long-term development of the city and its surrounding region.
