Following the June 2017 general election result United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May was likely to face severe difficulty in negotiating Brexit successfully unless she sought cross-party consensus. In this post Jim Gallagher suggested that consensus could be achieved through a special committee of the Privy Council, the membership of which would reflect the House of Commons and also contain representatives of the devolved legislatures. Separately, business representative organisations (CBI and EEF) called for a resetting of the Brexit negotiating strategy. This call was re-emphasied in a joint letter from the five leading business organisations in the UK published on the 16 June 2017. The National Farmers Union (NFU) said on the 14 June 2017 'The government must end the uncertainty over what Brexit will mean for UK farming and take a collaborative approach to negotiations to achieve the best outcome for the country. Former Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron said on the 13 June 2017 that Theresa May needed to listen to other parties on Brexit following the election result. First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones, wrote to the Prime Minister on the 13 June 2017 calling on her to put the UK economy above political self-interest and reconsider plans for a ‘hard Brexit’. He called on the Prime Minister to convene an urgent meeting of the Joint Ministerial Committee to agree the UK’s Brexit negotiating position. First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon also wrote to Prime Minister Theresa May to express the Scottish Government’s concerns over the UK’s current Brexit plans. The First Minister has called for membership of the European Single Market and the EU Customs Union to be protected and for the negotiating team to include representation from the devolved governments. She has also called for the UK government to immediately guarantee the rights of EU nationals to remain in the UK beyond the date of the UK's exit from the EU. Formal negotiations were due to start between the United KIngdom and the European Union on the 19 June 2017. |
