Yildirim has replaced the former prime minister Ahmet Davutoglu who announced his resignation from the party leadership at the beginning of May 2016 and in consequence also resigned from his position as prime minister. The new prime minister has been an AKP member since the party’s establishment in 2001. Yildirim used to be a transport, maritime and communications minister.
