Summary: Communication published by the European Commission on 5 March 2020, which sets out a strategy for equality between women and men across the European Union (EU). Further information: The Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025 sets out key actions for a period of five years and commits to ensure that the European Commission includes an equality perspective in all EU policy areas. The Strategy outlines how the Commission is to deliver on the promise made by the President of the European Commission that the EU provides the same opportunities for all that share the same aspirations. The implementation of this strategy is to be based on a dual approach of targeted measures to achieve gender equality, combined with strengthened gender mainstreaming. The Commission is to enhance gender mainstreaming by systematically including a gender perspective in all stages of policy design in all EU policy areas, internal and external. The strategy is to be implemented using intersectionality – the combination of gender with other personal characteristics or identities, and how these intersections contribute to unique experiences of discrimination – as a cross-cutting principle. On 21 January 2021, the European Parliament's plenary session adopted a report reacting to this Strategy and offering an input. |
