Further information:

Despite rumours of different names amidst negotiations for the formation of a new government in Italy, former Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni was eventually appointed by the new cabinet as the Italian nomination for the College of Commissioners. Upon nomination, Mr Gentiloni stated he would work to support growth 'and its social and environmental sustainability'.

His name was put forward on 5 September and formally announced on 9 September by the President of the European Commission. His portfolio was known on the following day, set to take on the role as the European Commissioner for Economy. The relevant committees of the European Parliament held a hearing with Mr Gentiloni on 3 October, in order to assess his capabilities to lead the portfolio. Media sources later reported he had been approved as a suitable candidate for the position.
