The British government’s + White Paper The future relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union of 12 July 2018 has been portrayed as an important step towards avoiding a ‘hard’ border in Ireland.

However, as Jan van Zyl Smit wrote, sustaining the rule of law in the Irish border region will depend on institutional co-operation.
