The European Parliament adopted on the 23 June 2011 – the Consumer Rights Directive, which the European Commission proposed in October 2008 (IP/08/1474). The vote followed a deal reached between the three EU institutions (European Commission, European Parliament and the Council of Ministers), and clears the final hurdle before the new rules can become reality for consumers.

The new Directive will need to be transposed into the national laws of EU Member States before the end of 2013.
