Book abstract:

This series is intended to provide a forum for substantial research contributions dealing with current political and economic developments in Central and Eastern Europe. In this volume, the emphasis is on economic and trade developments. Will Central and Eastern Europe provide more than a trivial challenge to the developed Nations of the world as well as to themselves? Will they represent new markets and new sources of low-cost labour or populations taking every action and avenue conceivable to emigrate to the Developed Nations? Will they be integrated into the Western economies and political structures or lose patience and wrap themselves into defensive postures and pose threats to the Developed Nations?

The chapters are: The end of Modell Deutschland; Formation of the economic order in Central Europe: a note on German Neoliberalism; Targeted benefits in Slovakia; Democracy-building in the new independent states of the former Soviet Union; The International Graduate School Zittau: educating across the borders; Public opinion on transformation in Eastern Europe; NATO: Senate floor consideration of the accession of the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland; Bosnia Stabilization Force (SFOR) and U.S. Policy; Central and Eastern European Agriculture in transition; Small and medium size enterprises in Bulgaria: alternatives for financing; Where does Supra-nationalism come from? The ideas floating through the Working Groups of the Council of the European Union.
