Confronting globalization. The quest for a social agenda

Abstract:

Is economic globalisation all it is cracked up to be? Who are the winners and losers? These are just two of the questions that the ILO’s World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalisation were asked to address. This work offers an evaluation of the Commission’s report, ‘A Fair Globalisation: Creating Opportunities for All’.

The contributors represent a wide range of skills and include representatives from both sides of the labour market, unions and employers, ILO officials, specialists in various work-related professions and academics in disciplines associated with work and society.

The contributions number fourteen in all and cover topics such as corporate social responsibility, child labour, employment security, the ‘brain drain’, migration to high income countries, psycho-social problems at work, ageism and worker participation. The roles of international organisations such as the OECD and the EU in issues relating to the social aspects of globalisation are also explored.

The work will interest practitioners in labour and employment law, health care and environmental policy.
