Set of conclusions adopted by the Council of the European Union on 2 December 2020, concerning cyber-security of connected devices.

Further information:

The conclusions acknowledge the increased use of consumer products and industrial devices connected to the internet and the related risks for privacy, information security and cybersecurity. They set out priorities to address this issue, and to boost global competitiveness of the European Union's industry of the Internet of Things (IoT) by ensuring the highest standards of resilience, safety and security.

The Council underlines the importance of assessing the need for horizontal legislation in the long-term to address all relevant aspects of the cybersecurity of connected devices. This would include specifying the necessary conditions for placement on the market.

Cybersecurity certification as defined under the Cybersecurity Act is deemed essential for raising the level of security within the digital single market. The Council invites the European Commission to consider a request for candidate cybersecurity certification schemes for connected devices and related services.
