Decision (EU) 2019/1750 amending Decision (EU) 2019/274 on the signing of the Agreement on the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community

Further information:

Following negotiations between the EU and the UK during the months of September and October 2019, an agreement was reached on a revised text of the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland included in the Withdrawal Agreement and on necessary technical adaptations to Articles 184 and 185 of that Agreement.

On 17 October, the European Council endorsed the amended Withdrawal Agreement. Decision (EU) 2019/274 should therefore be amended accordingly.

Background:

On 29 March 2017, the United Kingdom notified the European Council of its intention to withdraw from the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community. In accordance with Article 50 TEU, the European Union negotiated with the United Kingdom an agreement setting out the arrangements for its withdrawal, taking account of the framework for its future relationship with the Union ('Withdrawal Agreement').

On 11 January 2019, the Council of the European Union adopted Decision (EU) 2019/274 on the signing of the Withdrawal Agreement. In agreement with the United Kingdom, on 22 March the European Council extended the period under Article 50(3) TEU until 12 April. That period was subsequently further extended until 31 October by Decision (EU) 2019/642.
