Decision (EU) 2019/274 on the signing of the agreement on the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community

Summary:

Council Decision of 11 January 2019 on the signing, on behalf of the Union, of the agreement on the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community.

Further information:

In March 2017, the United Kingdom notified the European Council pursuant to Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union of its intention to withdraw from the European Union and from the European Atomic Energy Community.

On 29 April 2017 the European Council (Article 50) adopted negotiating guidelines. In the light of these guidelines, on 22 May the Council authorised the Commission to open the negotiations for an agreement with the United Kingdom setting out the arrangements for its withdrawal from the Union.

The negotiations were completed and the Withdrawal Agreement was initialled on 14 November 2018. A Political Declaration setting out the framework for the future relationship between the European Union and the United Kingdom was approved by the European Council on 25 November.
