President Trump's desire to get European NATO members to contribute more to their own defence was expected to bring about conflict at the June 2018 NATO Summit. Defence spending by European NATO allies has been increasing, but slowly in response to Europe’s economic recovery, to the increasingly challenging security environment in Europe since Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea, and to the string of terrorist attacks on European territory in recent years.
