The Dutch government collapsed on the 21 April 2012 after Geert Wilders, whose far-right Party for Freedom gave the conservative government its majority in parliament, rejected budget cuts aimed at meeting EU deficit limits.

The loss of Mr Wilders’ support left the government led by Mark Rutte, the Liberal prime minister, with just over a third of the seats in parliament, and elections were expected to take place in September 2012. Meanwhile, Mr Rutte still had to negotiate a budget with the opposition and submit it to the EU by the end of April 2012. Commentators doubted that this was feasible.

The forthcoming election campaign will be about Europe and the euro, PVV leader Geert Wilders said on the 21 April 2012, following his decision to pull out of austerity talks to reduce the budget deficit below the eurozone 3% limit.
