Background and further information:

Israel decided to install metal detectors at entry points to the Temple Mount (Haram al-Sharif) complex in Jerusalem's walled Old City following the death of two policemen on 14 July. While Palestine's President Mahmoud Abbas publicly condemned the attack, Israel's decision to step up security rapidly escalated the level of confrontation, resulting in the death of three Palestinians.

On 21 July, three Israelis were stabbed to death at home in a West Bank settlement as a retaliation for the events in Jerusalem. Soldiers were sent as a result to the area, sparking further violence.

Two days later, two Jordianians were killed and one Israeli was wounded in a shooting inside Israel's Embassy compound in Jordan's capital Amman. This incident was seen as related to the eruption of violence across the border.

The Middle East Quartet (comprising the United Nations, the European Union, Russia and the United States) showed deep concerns on the escalating tension and clashes in and around Jerusalem, according to a statement. The UN's Security Council met on 24 July to discuss the matter.

The sacred venue in Jerusalem's Old City is known to Jews as Mount Square and to Muslims as Noble Sanctuary.

This feature brings together information on an outbreak of violence between Israelis and Palestinians in July 2017 following the installation of metal detectors at entry points to the Noble Sanctuary-Temple Mount compound in Jerusalem's Old City.
