This book explains the origins and sources of EU environmental law and the organisations involved in the law-making process. It details the various legal, political and practical instruments that may be used and the relevant procedures. It also examines the relationship between the powers and obligations of EU institutions and those of member states.

There is a discussion of horizontal measures, including access to environmental information, participation in decision making, and access to justice at national and European levels. There is also coverage of funding, planning, industrial installations, environmental liability and taxes. The work examines the state of the law in specific areas such as biodiversity and nature conservation, products, water protection, air pollution, climate change and waste. It also covers the legal aspects of integrating environmental requirements into other policies such as agriculture, fishery, transport, energy, trade and tourism.

This new edition deals with recent directives on air quality, marine waters, waste and the protection of the environment through criminal law. It incorporates all of the provisions of the Lisbon Treaty, which was entered into force on 1 December 2009, and which introduced an explicit reference to the protection of the environment.
