THE European Union has protested to Eritrea after it expelled Italy's ambassador for speaking out against the arrest last month of 11 prominent reformers and the closure of the independent press. The Belgian presidency said relations between the EU and the African state were "seriously undermined" by the action. Ambassador Antonio Bandini was thrown out of the country on Monday after presenting a letter of protest on behalf of the European Union.

Gunnar Wiegand, spokesman for External Relations Commissioner Chris Patten, said the expulsion of Bandini was "unparalleled" and "totally unacceptable".
