Summary: A summit between representatives from the European Union (EU) and the United States of America (USA) was held on 30 April 2007. Further information: At the summit, both sides agreed adopted a new framework on transatlantic economic integration, including further cooperation to reduce regulatory burdens and work on key 'lighthouse projects'. This framework aims at laying a long-term foundation for strategic economic partnership between the US and the EU. Both sides also reaffirmed their desire to reach an agreement in the Doha Development Agenda (DDA) negotiations. Representatives also adopted a declaration on political and security issues, including commitments to concrete actions to strengthen liberty, prosperity, security, peace and human rights and address regional challenges, as well as efforts to combat terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and to work towards visa-free travel for all EU and U.S. citizens by creating conditions by which the Visa Waiver Program may be expanded. The summit adopted a joint statement on energy security and climate change. Both sides also welcomed the signing of a first stage Air Transport Agreement, which aims at the liberalisation of transatlantic air traffic. A commitment was reaffirmed to pursue negotiations to conclude a second stage agreement. |
