OXFAM has given the EU first prize in its 'Double Standards Awards' for hypocrisy in trade policy.

The development charity announced the award in Seville, ahead of the EU summit. It said the US had come a very close second in its 'double standards index' measuring the gap between free trade rhetoric and protectionist policies.

A spokesman for Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy said it was unfair to describe the EU as the main culprit for trade protectionism against developing economies. 'If you get away from the gimmickry, we and Oxfam share the objective to make trade more responsive to the challenges of development,' he said.
