EU leaders met on 16 July 2014 to discuss a number of key appointments to be made for top EU positions. At the end of the meeting, Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, concluded on the need for further consultations to decide on names for EU top positions: 'We are not yet at the point where we can get a consensual solution on a full package of appointments. We will continue consultations'. EU leaders decided to meet again on 30 August 2014 to discuss further the topic. Leaders would also probably discuss international issues, notably the situations in Ukraine, Iraq and Gaza. The European Council elected Donald Tusk, Prime Minister of Poland as the new President of the European Council and appointed Federica Mogherini, the Italian foreign minister, as High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. President Poroshenko of Ukraine attended part of the meeting and informed EU leaders on the recent dramatic escalation of the situation in Ukraine. EU leaders said they stood ready to take further steps in the light of the evolution of the situation on the ground. The European Council asked for these new sanctions to be ready for adoption within a week. EU leaders also discussed the state of the European economy, and expressed their worries on the weak recovery, high unemployment and low inflation. EU leaders discussed the situation in Syria / Iraq and the threat posed by Islamic State, and the situation in Gaza. |
