European Council Decision (EU) 2019/584 taken in agreement with the United Kingdom extending the period under Article 50(3) TEU

Summary:

European Council Decision of 11 April 2019 authorising a further extension of the period provided for in Article 50(3) TEU.

Further information:

On 20 March 2019 the United Kingdom submitted a request for an extension of the period provided for in Article 50(3) TEU until 30 June 2019, with a view to finalising the ratification of the Withdrawal Agreement.

On 21 March the European Council agreed to an extension until 22 May, provided the Withdrawal Agreement was approved by the House of Commons in the following week or, if that were not to be the case, until 12 April.

As the House of Commons did not approve the Withdrawal Agreement, on 5 April the United Kingdom requested a further extension of the period provided for in Article 50(3) TEU. A special summit of the European Council held on 10 April agreed to further extend that period until 31 October.
