Summary: Overview and information on the European Defence Agency (EDA), one of the European Union's bodies. Further information: The European Defence Agency (EDA) was established under Joint Action 2004/551/CFSP in July 2004 to support Member States (except for Denmark) to develop their military resources. It promotes collaboration, launches initiatives and introduces solutions to improve defence capabilities. It also helps Member States that are willing to do so to develop joint defence capabilities. The EDA is a facilitator in developing the capabilities that underpin the European Union's Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). The agency is a European defence cooperation 'hub'. It works towards strengthening the European defence industry and acts as a facilitator and interface between Member States' military stakeholders and EU policies that impact on defence. To implement the provisions of the Lisbon Treaty, the Joint Action was first replaced by Council Decision 2011/411/CFSP in July 2011, which was later revised by Council Decision (CFSP) 2015/1835 on the statute, seat and operational rules of the EDA. In May 2017, Member States agreed to reinforce the agency's mission, including by making it the central operator for EU-funded defence-related activities. The EDA is based in Brussels (Belgium) and is headed by the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. |
