European leaders and American presidents have not always seen eye-to-eye in the past about NATO, but the first summit with President Trump in May 2017 carried unique risks for the alliance. The Europeans needed to convince an ultra-sceptical president that NATO and the EU could be effective security providers in Europe; and they needed to look as though they believed it. The author argues that they should not wait for the United States to take the lead – NATO would benefit from Europeans taking a more active role in shaping the alliance’s policies
