Summary:

The various forms of family-related leave are a central issue in the widespread attempts across Europe to create a better work-life balance. Such leave has received increasing attention over recent years from both legislators (often prompted by EU Directives) and the social partners.

This study looks at the current position in 19 EU Member States and Norway in terms of legislation and collective bargaining on the key forms of family-related leave - maternity leave, paternity leave, parental leave and leave for urgent family reasons - and the views of trade unions and employers on the matter. It also assesses the impact of family-related leave and its effects on gender equality.
