Overview and information relating to the Finnish presidency of the Council of the European Union, running from 1 July to 31 December 2019.

Further information:

Finland took over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union on 1 July 2019. This was the third occasion since its accession to the European Union. The motto of the Finnish Presidency is 'Sustainable Europe - Sustainable Future'.

The presidency programme focuses on four main priorities:

  • strengthen common values and the rule of law
  • make the EU more competitive and socially inclusive
  • strengthen the EU's position as a global leader in climate action
  • protect the security of citizens comprehensively

The priorities of the rotating presidency were discussed in several sectoral meetings of the Council of the European Union as well as by the plenary of the European Parliament.
