Summary:

Reports and analyses of the process of government formation in Ireland, following an inconclusive general election on 8 February 2020 from which none of the competing political parties managed to acquire a parliamentary majority.

Further information:

A surge in support for left-wing Sinn Féin led to a victory following the election, bringing to an end the traditional dominance of centre-right (incumbent) Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil. Even so, this was not enough to produce a straightforward parliamentary majority.

On 20 February 2020, the leaders of the three largest political forces in the new Parliament composition faced a vote to understand their support across the chamber to become Prime Minister. No one managed to get enough support, which led to the resignation of incumbent Prime Minister Leo Varadkar. In the meantime, Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil announce they were to engage in exploratory talks on a potential solution for the stalemate.
