The 9th Secretary General of the United Nations will be appointed during the latter part of 2016 to begin their term of office from 1 January 2017.

Under the UN Charter, the Organisation’s top official is appointed by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council.

The selection process for a new United Nations Secretary-General, traditionally decided behind closed-doors by a few powerful countries, will for the first time in history involve public discussions with each candidate campaigning for the world’s top diplomatic post.

As of July 2016 there were 12 candidates, nine of whom were European:

+ Portugal - António Guterres
+ Slovenia - Danilo Türk
+ Bulgaria - Irina Bokova
+ Serbia - Vuk Jeremić
+ Macedonia (FYROM) - Srgjan Kerim
+ Croatia - Vesna Pusić
+ Montenegro - Igor Lukšić
+ Moldova - Natalia Gherman
+ Slovak Republic - Miroslav Lajčák

In July 2016 the Security Council held its first ever private discussions with all candidates, and an informal straw poll was held.

EurActiv suggested that at this stage the four front runners were: António Guterres, Danilo Türk, Irina Bokova and Vuk Jeremić.

In a further straw poll taken amongst the Security Council on the 26 September 2016 the clear 'winner' was António Guterres.

However, it was confirmed on the 28 September 2016 that the the Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov had now nominated European Commission Vice-President Kristalina Georgieva to be his country’s candidate to run for the post of UN Secretary-General, instead of Irina Bokova.
