Summary:

A meeting of the General Affairs Council (GAC) was held on 25 February 2020. The agenda includes the following items:

• Adoption of Decision authorising the opening of negotiations with the United Kingdom (UK) on a future partnership, nominating the European Commission as EU negotiator and adopting negotiating directives which constitute a mandate for those negotiations;
• Discussion of the annotated draft agenda for the forthcoming European Council meeting;
• Presentation by the European Commission of its Communication on the revision of the European Union's accession methodology for a future enlargement;
• Discussion on the legislative work in 2020 and multiannual programme;
• Update by the European Commission on preparations for the annual rule of law cycle and report, based on a Communication published in July 2019.
