On the 21 May 2012 the European Commission gave Google 'a matter of weeks' to propose a 'remedies package' in order to avoid formal legal proceedings and possible fines over allegations that the online search giant is abusing its dominant market position.

On the 23 May 2012 Google hit back at the EU ultimatum for it to stop its allegedly anti-competitive business practices, with a firm denial of wrongdoing that would dent the European Commission’s hopes of a quick settlement.

EurActiv reported on the 3 July 2012 that Google had offered to settle antitrust charges following the ultimatum by EU regulators investigating its business practices, in a move that could stave off a hefty fine.

Further negotiations between Google and the European Commission were reported by the Financial Times on the 17 and the 20 July 2012.
