The FT and other news sources reported that Greek government officials reported on the 21 August 2012 that planned cuts to Greece’s public expenditure will be even deeper than previously announced, as fears rose that the scale of the proposed reductions may test the ruling coalition’s unity.

The three-party coalition was expected to survive the announcement on cuts in September 2012. But its cohesion would be severely tested if Greece did not win an extension of its bailout programme by two years to 2016.
