€20,000 a day is not an insignificant sum, most would agree. Except, it would appear, in Greece.

This is the figure Hellenic taxpayers are tipping down the drain every day because the Greek government is unable to stop tipping of another kind on the island of Crete. The European Court of Justice imposed the daily fine in July last year because of the uncontrolled waste dumping that was taking place on the island.

The bill is more than €4.2 million and counting.
