Summary:

Reports and information relating to the infringement proceedings launched by the European Commission against the United Kingdom (UK), over its failure to name a candidate for the College of Commissioners under the leadership of Ursula von der Leyen.

Further information:

Following the acceptance by the European Union (EU) of the UK's request for an extension to the Article 50 process - which deals with the country's withdrawal from the EU (also known as Brexit) - until the end of January 2020, the President-elect of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stated she would expect the national government to put forward a candidate to integrate the College of Commissioners she would lead, expectedly from 1 December 2019. As a result, two letters were sent recalling the UK's obligations under the EU Treaty.

Following the United Kingdom's reply on those letters on 13 November - in which it is stated the government was not in a position to name a candidate - the European Commission decided to launch infringement proceedings by sending a letter of formal notice to the UK for breaching its EU Treaty obligations by not suggesting a candidate for the post of EU Commissioner. The national authorities were givern until 22 November to provide their views.
