Summary:

Statement adopted on 25 January 2019 by a set of 76 partners at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) - including the European Union (EU) Member States - following the decision to engage in negotiations to put in place global rules on electronic commerce (e-commerce).

Further information:

Rules on electronic commerce aim to enhance opportunities and address challenges of e-commerce in both developed and developing countries. The negotiations should result in a multilateral legal framework that consumers and businesses, especially smaller ones, could rely on to make it easier and safer to buy, sell and do business online.

The negotiating process was scheduled to start in March 2019 and would remain open to other WTO members who might still be interested to join.
