Summary:
A meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council was held on 8-9 June 2017. The agenda includes the following items:
- Discussion on the way forward relating to e-evidence, on the basis of the solutions identified as a result of the European Commission's expert process;
- Briefing by the European Commission on the work carried out in the expert process on encryption;
- Briefing by the Council Presidency on the state of play with regard to data retention;
- Discussion on the challenges related to the increased number of children in migration travelling to and arriving in the European Union, followed by the adoption of a set of conclusions;
- Adoption of general approaches relating to a number of legislative proposals, including:
- Exchange of views on migration policy, in particular on the situation in the Central Mediterranean and on the implementation of the Malta Declaration;
- Discussion on return and readmission policy, followed by adoption of conclusions on enhancing return and readmission of illegal staying persons.
- Briefing on the work carried out on the reform of the common European asylum system (CEAS) and discussion on the way forward;
- Exchange of views on improving information exchange and interoperability of information systems, followed by the adoption of conclusions;
- Discussion on the legislative package aimed at improving the Schengen Information System (SIS).
