Legislative package adopted by the European Commission on 1 April 2014, which aims at introducing facilitations in the processing of Schengen visas.

The proposals put forward on this occasion were intended to shorten and simplify the procedures for those wanting to come to the European Union (EU) for short stays, and induce more cost savings and less bureaucracy, whilst maintaining the level of security. The main elements of the proposed changes include:

  • Clearer and shorter deadlines and easier lodging of visa applications;
  • Easier issuing of multiple-entry visas;
  • A new type of visa allowing those who intend to travel around Europe to stay longer than 90 days in the Schengen area.

These legislative initiatives were later withdrawn by the European Commission due to lack of political conditions to successfully adopt them.
