High safety standards for consumers and the environment are one of the core goals of the European Union (EU) for its single market. The so-called essential requirements are set out in specific product legislation frameworks. The conformity assessments seek to demonstrate that the products placed on the market conform with the these requirements. In many cases the assessment is carried out by the manufacturer, but sometimes the legislator may decide that the assessment shall be performed by a notified body.

These bodies carry out the procedures for conformity assessment within the meaning of applicable EU legislation. The NANDO information system is managed by the European Commission and it provides a list of all notified bodies for each product legislation. A notified body must operate in a competent, non-discriminatory, transparent, neutral independent and impartial manner. Notification of Notified Bodies (or their withdrawal) is a responsibility of the notifying Member States.

The Member States, EFTA countries (EEA members) and other countries with which the EC has concluded Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) and Protocols to the Europe Agreements on Conformity Assessment and Acceptance of Industrial Products (PECAs) have designated Notified Bodies, established per directive.

NANDO is one of the information systems making up the EU's Single Market Compliance Space (SMCS).
