The European Commission adopted proposals to update and modernise the principles enshrined in the 1995 Data Protection Directive to guarantee privacy rights in the future on the 25 January 2012

The proposals focused on reinforcing individuals' rights, strengthening the EU internal market, ensuring a high level of data protection in all areas (including police and criminal justice cooperation), ensuring proper enforcement of the rules and setting global data-protection standards.

In this article the FT reported that businesses were braced for a radical overhaul of European Union privacy rules, which some fretted could result in costly burdens and large fines for errant companies. However, the European Commission claimed that there would be annual savings for businesses of around €2.3bn. The initiative would alsohelp reinforce consumer confidence in online services, providing a much needed boost to growth, jobs and innovation in Europe.
