Summary: Reports of the ceremony which sworn in Nicolas Maduro for a second term as the President of Venezuela, despite widespread criticism from internal and external stakeholders. Further information: A number of countries announced they would not recognise the presidency, following a set of claims of vote-rigging and a boycott from the opposition parties to the presidential election held in May 2018. However, some other leaders attended the event, which was also followed by thousands on the streets of the country's capital city. Mr Maduro vowed to press on with his vision for Venezuela, while claiming the existence of conspiracies from the outside world to terminate his leadership. The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Policy recalled a set of conclusions adopted by the Council of the European Union in which the EU states the outcome of the election lacked credibility. Mr Maduro is urged to recognise and respect the role and independence of the National Assembly, release all political prisoners, uphold the rule of law, human rights and fundamental freedoms and urgently address the pressing needs of the population. |
