The European Parliament appointed on 21 January 2016 a group of 45 MEPs to become members of a committee of inquiry into car makers' breaches of EU rules on car emission tests.

The committee was set to also investigate failures by member states and the European Commission to enforce EU standards. It was scheduled to present an interim report within 6 months, and a final one with a year, of starting its work.

The EMIS committee had its constituent meeting on 2 March, in which Kathleen Van Brempt was elected its chair.
