A study released in March 2016 confirmed that Xylella fastidiosa was responsible for the disease that was destroying olive trees in southern Italy.

Oleander and myrtle-leaf milkwort seemed to succumb to the Apulian strain of the bacterium, while citrus, grapevine and holm oak appeared to be resistant.
