Decision (EU) 2020/2228 - adopted by the co-legislators on 23 December 2020 - on establishing the European Year of Rail in 2021.
The proposal to declare 2021 'European Year of Rail' aims to promote rail transport in line with the objectives set out in the Commission's European Green Deal, including with regard to sustainable and smart mobility. Through projects, debates, events, exhibitions and initiatives across Europe, the European Year of Rail is to promote rail as an attractive and sustainable way to move across Europe, to citizens, business and authorities, emphasising its Union wide and innovative dimension.
This initiative was put forward by the Commission on 4 March 2020. The Council of the European Union adopted its general approach on this matter on 24 June. The European Parliament's relevant committee adopted a position and mandate for trilogue negotiations on 12 October. An informal agreement between the co-legislators on a compromise text was reached on 12 November 2020. This was formally endorsed by the Parliament on 15 December and by the Council on 17 December. The Act was formally signed by the co-legislators on 23 December 2020 and published in the Official Journal on 28 December 2020.
