Background and further information: The Fisheries Partnership Agreement (FPA) between the European Union and Cape Verde entered into force on 30 March 2007. The previous Protocol to the Agreement entered into force on 23 December 2014 and expired on 22 December 2018. The European Commission conducted negotiations with the Government of Cape Verde with a view to concluding a new Protocol to the Agreement. Following these negotiations, the new Protocol was initialled on 12 October 2018. On 14 March 2019 the European Commission presented proposals for Council Decisions on the signing and conclusion of the new Protocol, and for a Council Regulation on the allocation of fishing opportunities under the Protocol. On 17 May the signing of the Protocol was approved by Decision (EU) 2019/951, and the allocation of fishing opportunities was established by Regulation (EU) 2019/952. The new Protocol provides fishing opportunities for Union vessels in Cape Verde waters, on the basis of the best available scientific advice and following the recommendations of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). |
