Further information:

The Pericles programme is dedicated to the protection of euro banknotes and coins against counterfeiting. It provides training and technical assistance for competent national authorities to enable them to further improve the protection of euro banknotes and coins. This Regulation lays down the objectives of the programme, the budget for the period 2021-2027, the forms of EU funding and the rules for providing such funding. It also repeals Regulation (EU) No 331/2014.

The draft law was originally tabled by the European Commission on 31 May 2018 in the framework of the wider package of the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for 2021-2027. The European Parliament adopted its negotiating position on 13 February 2019. The Commission adopted revamped proposals on the MFF 2021-2027 in May 2020. The Council of the European Union adopted its position on 16 April 2021. The Act was signed by the co-legislators on 20 May 2021 and published in the Official Journal on 27 May 2021.

Regulation (EU) 2021/1696 was adopted by the Council of the European Union on 21 September 2021 to extend the application of Regulation (EU) 2021/840 to the non-participating Member States.
