Russian President, Vladimir Putin, moved in June 2012 to further weaken Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev's control over the energy sector, creating a special presidential commission for the strategic development of the country’s most important industry.

The Russian president appointed Igor Sechin as the commission’s secretary in chief, further strengthening the clout of the hawkish Putin ally who previously served as deputy prime minister in charge of the energy sector, amid a raging battle for control of the Russian oil and gas industry.
