In recent decades the European Union has been one of the strategic partners of El Salvador. Their relations are based on two instruments: The EU has also played an active role in the electoral observation missions in El Salvador, by participating with Electoral Expert Missions in the 2009 2012 and 2014 elections. El Salvador and the EU have consolidated their economic relations through the establishment of the Association Agreement between the EU and Central America America which represents an opportunity for El Salvador’s development. El Salvador has been also a member of the Generalised System of Preferences from 2008. The European Union intervened in El Salvador helping the country to face against Hurricane Stan in 2006 and two earthquakes in 2001 by the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations scheme. |
