Relations between the EU and Nicaragua have increasingly been developed within a Central American regional integration approach. In fact, Nicaragua has been a party to important agreements between the EU and Central American countries: the Central America Cooperation Framework Agreement.

The economic relations with Nicaragua are based on the European Union-Central America Association Agreement witch covers Trade Relations, Political Dialogue and Cooperation.

Over the past decades, the European Union intervened with Nicaragua by Electoral Observation Mission in 2001, 2006 and 2011. The European Union also intervened with Nicargua helping its citizens to face consequences of Hurricane Felix by Humanitarian Aid.
